How do you know when you get there?
I think back to all of the pursuits - the dreams, goals - I’ve set in my life, some reached and others not. I think back to not only the joy of the pursuit and the moments of achievement but also the frustration and struggles and disappointing realization that I’ve hit the end.
Edward Monkton’s pleasant poem captures one thing that I know to make of all of this:
“He knows not where he’s going
For the ocean will decide -
It’s not the DESTINATION…
…It’s the glory of THE RIDE”
I embrace this idea.
But I still wonder…
Some goals seem so grand that it feels impossible to know if you’ve gotten there.
I wonder if some dreams remain dreams… forever.
